Down in Egypt, some of the people started bowing to statues. God loved them too much to stay quiet about it.
Today's Story
Now that the people were living in Egypt, something sad began to happen. They started bowing down to statues that the people around them worshiped. They lit little fires and gave gifts to gods made of wood and stone.
But those statues could not see them. They could not hear a single prayer. They could not love anybody or help anybody at all. They were just lumps of wood and stone.
God spoke to His people through Jeremiah, and His voice was full of love. “Why are you bowing to things that cannot help you?” God asked. “I am the one who made you. I am the one who has cared for you all along. Please come back to Me.”
It made God sad, the way a parent feels sad when a child wanders far away. He was not done loving them. He kept calling, kept reaching out, kept saying, “Come home to Me. I am the real God, and I am the one who truly loves you.”
God wanted their whole heart — not because He needs us, but because nothing else in the whole world can love us the way He does.
A Big Word
Talk About It
- The statues could not see, hear, or help anyone. What are some ways the real God shows that He can see and hear and help you?
- God kept calling the people to come home to Him. How does it feel to know God always wants you close, even after you wander?
- What is one thing you love a whole lot? How can you love God even more than that thing?
