This is the very last chapter of Jeremiah. For a long time, Jeremiah had gently warned the people to come back to God. Today we see what happened — and a little door of hope at the very end.
Today's Story
For years and years, Jeremiah had cried and pleaded with the people. “Please come back to God,” he said. “He loves you. He wants to help you.” But most of the people would not listen.
So the sad day came that Jeremiah had warned about. A great army surrounded the city of Jerusalem. After a long, hard time, the city fell. The beautiful temple where people had worshiped God was knocked down. Many people were taken far away from their homes to live in another land.
It was one of the saddest days in the whole Bible. The warnings had come true.
But the chapter does not end there. The very last part tells about a king named Jehoiachin, who had been locked away in a prison in Babylon for a long, long time.
One day, a new ruler did something kind. He brought Jehoiachin out of the prison. He spoke gently to him. He gave him fresh clothes and a special seat at the king's own table. And every single day for the rest of his life, Jehoiachin was cared for.
After the hardest day, a little light of kindness shone. It was God's quiet way of saying, “I am not done with you yet.”
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- Have you ever had a really hard day, and then one small kind thing made it a little better? What was it?
- The king sat in a dark prison for a long time before something good finally happened. When you have to wait for good things, what helps you keep hoping?
- Even after the saddest day, God showed kindness. What does that tell you about how God feels about people who are hurting?
