John 21 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

After the resurrection, Jesus makes breakfast on the beach for His friends — and gently gives Peter a fresh start.

Today's Story

After Jesus rose, some of His friends went fishing all night — but caught nothing. At dawn, a man on the shore called out, “Throw your net on the other side!” They did — and the net filled with so many fish they could barely pull it in!

John gasped, “It's the Lord!” Peter was so excited he jumped right into the water and swam to shore!

And there was Jesus, with a warm fire going, cooking breakfast. “Come and eat,” He said. He served them fish and bread on the beach. What a breakfast!

After they ate, Jesus talked gently with Peter. (Peter had let Jesus down before, and he felt bad about it.) Three times Jesus asked, “Peter, do you love Me?” Three times Peter said, “Yes, Lord, You know I love You.” And each time Jesus said, “Then take care of My sheep” — meaning, “Take care of My people. I still have a big job for you.”

Jesus wasn't bringing up Peter's mistakes. He was giving Peter a fresh start, and an important job. “Follow Me,” Jesus said. And Peter did.
