Lamentations 1 for Kids

Lamentations is a book of sad songs. It's okay to be sad sometimes — and it's okay to tell God all about it.

Today's Story

There was once a busy, happy city called Jerusalem. The streets were full of people. There was singing. There were parties. Children played, and friends laughed together.

But now the city is quiet. So quiet.

The people had to go far, far away from home, and the city sits all by itself. The song says it like this: “How lonely the city sits! Once it was so full of people.”

Imagine your favorite place — your home, your park, your church — suddenly empty. No friends. No noise. Just you, missing everyone.

That is how the city feels. It cries at night, and there are tears on its cheeks. It misses the happy days. It misses the people. It misses the way things used to be.

The people are sad because they had stopped listening to God for a long, long time, and now everything feels broken and hard.

But even while the city cries, it does something brave. It turns and talks to God. It says, “Look, Lord. See how sad I am.”

And that is exactly the right thing to do. When everything feels broken, you can still talk to God. He is listening.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. When was a time you felt sad or lonely — maybe you missed a friend, or someone was far away? What helped you feel better?
  2. The sad city did something brave: it told God how it felt. Why do you think it's okay to tell God when we're sad?
  3. If a friend of yours was feeling lonely today, what is one kind thing you could do to help them?
