Matthew 2 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Far away, wise men spot a brand-new star in the sky and follow it on a long journey — because they know it means a special King has been born.

Today's Story

Far away in the East, some wise men who studied the stars saw a brand-new star, brighter than all the rest. “This means a special King has been born!” they said. So they packed up gifts and followed the star on a long, long journey to find Him.

They stopped in Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the new King?” This worried King Herod, who didn't want any other king around. Secretly jealous, he told them, “When you find Him, come and tell me.” (He wasn't being honest — but God had a plan.)

The star led the wise men right to the house where Jesus was with Mary. They were overjoyed! They bowed down low and worshiped Him, and they gave Him their treasures: gold, and sweet-smelling frankincense and myrrh — gifts fit for a King.

Then God warned the wise men in a dream not to go back to jealous Herod. So they went home a different way.

And God warned Joseph in a dream too: “Get up! Take Mary and Jesus and hurry to Egypt, where you'll be safe.” So they did, that very night. God kept baby Jesus safe and sound.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. The wise men traveled a long, long way to find and worship Jesus. What's something you would travel far for?
  2. They gave Jesus their very best treasures. What's a “gift” you could give Jesus — like your kindness, your songs, or your love?
  3. God protected Jesus by warning people in dreams. How does it feel to know God watches over you, too?
