The wall is finished and the people are happy. But this last chapter shows us something important — good things need looking after, or they slowly slip away.
Today's Story
For a long time Nehemiah helped lead the city, and things went well. Then he had to go back and serve the king for a while. He was away from Jerusalem.
When Nehemiah finally came home, he looked around — and his heart sank. While he was gone, the good habits had slipped away, one by one.
The helpers who worked at God's house weren't being given any food, so they had given up and gone back to their farms. The special rest day, the day to stop work and remember God, had turned into just another busy market day. And some of the people had started to forget God altogether.
Nehemiah didn't shrug and say, “Oh well.” He rolled up his sleeves and set things right. He brought the helpers back. He shut the city gates on the rest day so everyone could stop and rest. He gently reminded the people, “Remember God. Don't let these good things slip away again.”
Then Nehemiah prayed a simple prayer: “Please remember me, my God. Remember the good things I have done.”
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- Have you ever cleaned up your room, then a few days later it got messy again? Why do you think good things slip back like that?
- Nehemiah came back and fixed things instead of giving up. What is one thing you could fix or tidy that has slipped lately?
- What is a good habit your family wants to keep doing — like praying, sharing, or saying sorry? How can you help each other keep it?
