Nehemiah 5 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

In the middle of all the building, a sad problem pops up. Some families are hungry, and they need someone to stand up for them.

Today's Story

While everyone was busy building the wall, some of the poorer families came to Nehemiah with tears in their eyes.

“We're hungry,” they said. “To buy food, we had to borrow money from the richer people. But they made us pay back way too much. Now we have nothing left!”

When Nehemiah heard this, he was upset. It was not fair. Some people had plenty while their own neighbors had empty tummies.

So Nehemiah called everyone together. “This isn't right,” he said kindly but firmly. “Give back what you took. Stop charging your neighbors too much. Let's take care of each other.” And the rich people listened. They said, “We will give it back.”

Nehemiah did more than just talk. He was a leader, but he shared his own food and never took the special money he was allowed to take. He chose to be fair and kind, and he asked everyone else to do the same.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Has something ever felt “not fair” to you? What happened?
  2. Nehemiah stood up for the families who were hungry. Who could you stand up for when something isn't fair?
  3. Nehemiah shared his own food instead of keeping it all. What is something you could share with someone who needs it?
