Nehemiah 7 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

The big wall around Jerusalem is finally finished! Now Nehemiah has to keep the city safe and find out who lives there.

Today's Story

The wall was done. Every stone was in place. The big gates were hung. After all that hard work, Jerusalem finally had a wall around it again!

But Nehemiah knew that a finished wall still needs careful keeping. A gate left open at the wrong time could let trouble walk right in.

So Nehemiah picked helpers. Some would watch the gates. Some would sing in the temple. Some would guard the walls all through the night. He told them, “Do not open the gates until the sun is high and bright. And while the gates are open, keep watch!”

Then Nehemiah noticed something. The city was big, with lots of room — but not many people lived inside it yet. He wanted to fill it up with families.

So God gave Nehemiah an idea. He found an old list from long ago — a list of every family who had traveled home from far away. Name after name after name. Mothers, fathers, children, grandparents. Even the names of their donkeys and camels!

God had not forgotten one single person. Every name mattered. Every family belonged. And now they were home, safe inside the wall.

  1. Who are the people who help keep YOU safe? What do they do for you?
  2. Nehemiah set guards so the city would be safe even at night. What helps you feel safe when it is dark?
  3. God knew every single name on that long list. How does it feel to know God knows your name too?
