Psalms 142 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

David wrote Psalm 142 when he was hiding in a cave. People were chasing him, and he felt scared and all alone.

Today's Story

David was hiding inside a dark cave.

Outside the cave, people were looking for him who wanted to hurt him. He could not go home. He felt scared. He felt lonely. He looked all around and it seemed like nobody cared about him at all.

So what did David do? He did not pretend he was okay. He did not hide his feelings the way he was hiding in the cave. Instead, he poured all of it out to God, like tipping a full cup until every last drop comes out.

He told God, “I am so tired. I am so worried. People are too strong for me, and I do not know what to do.”

And then David said the bravest thing of all. Right there in the dark, with trouble all around him, he prayed, “You are my safe place.”

David could not see a way out yet. But he knew where to run. He ran to God with his words, and God heard every single one.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. David told God he felt scared and lonely instead of hiding it. Why do you think it helps to tell God how you really feel?
  2. Where is a place you feel safe? David said God was his safe place no matter where he was. What do you think that means?
  3. David prayed even while he was still in trouble. What is something happening right now that you could pour out to God?
