Zephaniah 1 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Zephaniah was a messenger for God. His name means “God hides me” — like being kept safe under a wing.

God gave him a message for people who had slowly forgotten all about Him.

Today's Story

God gave Zephaniah a message, and it started out serious. The people God loved had a problem. They had stopped looking for Him.

It hadn't happened all at once. Little by little, they filled their lives with other things. They bowed down to the sun and the stars. They made tiny statues and called them “gods.” Some of them still said God's name on Sunday, but they didn't really mean it the rest of the week.

And the saddest part? A lot of them had decided God just wasn't paying attention. God said, “Some people think in their hearts, The Lord won't do anything, good or bad. He doesn't even notice us.

But God did notice. He always notices. He told Zephaniah, “I will search Jerusalem with lamps.” Picture God walking through a dark house with a little lantern, looking into every corner — not to scare anyone, but because He hadn't given up on finding His people.

God was warning them so they could turn back to Him before it was too late. A warning, when it comes from someone who loves you, is really a kind of gift.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Have you ever done something tiny when you thought no one was watching? God still saw, and He still loved you. How does that feel?
  2. The people let little things slowly crowd out the big God. What things sometimes get all of your attention — a screen, a toy, a game?
  3. A warning from someone who loves you is a gift. When has a grown-up warned you about something, and you were glad later that they did?
