Zephaniah 2 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

In chapter 1 God warned His own people. Now He turns to the big, proud nations around them that liked to push other people around.

Today's Story

Zephaniah looked around at all the lands near God's people. Some of those nations were proud — really proud. They bragged. They made fun of God's people. They said, “Look how strong WE are. Nobody can touch us.”

God noticed every bit of it. One city, Nineveh, even told itself, “I am the greatest. There is nobody but me!” When you only ever look at yourself, you stop being able to see anyone else — and you stop being able to see God.

So God gave Zephaniah a beautiful invitation, right in the middle of all the warnings. He said, “Come together and gather, you humble people of the land. Seek the Lord. Do what He commands. Look to Him in a gentle and quiet way.

Did you catch who God invited? Not the loud, bragging ones. The humble ones — the people who knew they needed God and looked up to Him.

Being proud puffs you up until there's no room for anyone else. Being humble keeps a soft, open spot in your heart where God can come right in.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. When have you wanted to brag, “Look at ME, I'm the best”? It's a feeling everybody gets. What could you say or do instead?
  2. The proud nations only looked at themselves. What do you think happens to your heart when you only ever think about yourself?
  3. God invited the humble people to come close. What is one way you could “look up” to God today?
