What Does Lamentations 3:2 Mean?
There is a terrible reversal in this verse. God had once led Israel by a pillar of fire to give them light, guiding them through the wilderness toward the land. Now the sufferer feels led the other way: 'into darkness, but not into light.' The same guiding hand seems to be conducting him deeper into the dark.
Yet even here he speaks of being 'led.' He has not been abandoned to wander; there is still a hand, still a path, even if the path runs through shadow. This is the strange consolation hidden in the complaint. To be led into darkness by God is not the same as being lost without him. The man clings to the leading even when he cannot see where it goes.
