'Waters flowed over mine head' adds drowning to the imagery of the pit. The waters of trouble have risen above him, closing over his head, the ancient picture of being overwhelmed and swept under by sorrow. At this point he gives himself up for lost: 'then I said, I am cut off.'

'I am cut off' is the verdict of total despair, the conviction that all is finished, that he is severed from life and from hope. The poem has brought the sufferer to the very brink. This is the moment just before rescue, the darkness just before the cry that heaven answers.
