What Does Lamentations 3:55 Mean?
From the lowest point, the deepest pit, comes the turning act: 'I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon.' When he had given himself up as cut off, he nevertheless called. Prayer rose from the bottom of the pit, from the place of drowning and burial. This is faith at its most essential — calling on God's name when there is nothing left but God.
There is no place too low for prayer to reach heaven. 'Out of the low dungeon' the cry went up, and as the following verses reveal, it was heard. This is one of Scripture's great assurances: that God hears the prayer of the desperate, that no depth can muffle a cry to his name. The sufferer teaches every reader that the way up from the deepest pit begins with calling on the LORD.
