What Does Lamentations 5:19 Mean?
Against the desolation of Zion comes one of the great affirmations of the book: 'Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever.' Everything else has fallen — the city, the temple, the crown, the leaders — but God himself remains, unchanged and unshaken. When all that seemed permanent has crumbled, the one truly permanent reality is the LORD. His being abides when all else passes away.
'Thy throne from generation to generation.' God's rule has not been overthrown along with the earthly throne of Judah; his kingdom endures through every generation, without end. The foxes may walk on Zion's mountain, but God still reigns. This is the rock beneath the prayer, the unshakable ground on which the plea for restoration can stand. Because God remains forever, there is reason to hope that the people he loves will not remain forever in ruin. His eternity is the anchor of their hope.
