Lamentations 5:3 Meaning and Explanation

'We are orphans and fatherless.' The people describe themselves as children without a father, the most vulnerable of all in the ancient world, with no one to provide or protect. The fathers have fallen in war or been carried away, leaving the family defenseless.

'Our mothers are as widows.' The mothers, whether truly bereaved or simply left without their husbands' protection, are as exposed as widows. The verse paints a whole society stripped of its guardians, reduced to the most defenseless conditions. Yet Scripture everywhere declares that God is the special protector of the orphan and the widow, the defender of exactly those who have no other defender. By naming themselves orphans and widows before God, the people place themselves precisely where his compassion is most surely promised.
