Lamentations 5:7 Meaning and Explanation

'Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.' The people acknowledge that earlier generations sinned and have now passed away, while the present generation bears the weight of the consequences. There is a real sense in which the effects of sin ripple down through generations, and the children inherit the ruin their fathers set in motion.

Yet this verse must be held alongside the chapter's own confession in verse sixteen, 'woe unto us, that we have sinned.' The people do not finally blame their fathers and excuse themselves; elsewhere they own their own guilt. Here they simply feel the painful truth that they are reaping a harvest sown before them. It is part of the honest complexity of the lament, naming both the inherited and the personal dimensions of the sorrow they bear.
