What Does Luke 1:18 Mean?
Standing before an angel, beside the altar, the old priest hesitates. His question asks for proof: whereby shall I know? Age and long disappointment have taught him to guard his hope.
It is possible to pray for years and still be unready for the answer. Zacharias is not faithless — he is weary, and weariness can make even the devout measure God's promise by human probabilities. The Lord will deal with his doubt firmly but kindly: the promise will stand whether or not the priest can yet believe it.
