What Does Luke 1:63 Mean?
Zacharias asks for a small writing tablet and settles the question in four words: his name is John. Not shall be — is. Heaven named the child months ago, and his father now simply agrees.
This is repentance written out: the man who once asked for proof now affirms God's word without qualification, against custom and expectation. The unbelief of the temple dissolves at the writing tablet. The onlookers marvel — and a greater wonder is seconds away, for obedience completed is about to loose his tongue.
