What Does Luke 10:32 Mean?
A Levite assisted in the temple — a second representative of the worship of Israel on the same road. He does a little more than the priest: he comes to the place and looks. Then the verdict repeats word for word: he passed by on the other side.
The repetition is the teaching. Compassion withheld by one traveller becomes easier for the next to withhold; indifference sets precedents. Looking is not loving — the Levite inspected the need and declined it, which is its own kind of answer. Hearts are formed by what they practise, not by where they serve, and nearness to sacred things does not by itself produce mercy.
