What Does Luke 11:30 Mean?
Jesus interprets the sign. Jonah himself -- the prophet brought through the sea to a pagan city -- was the sign to Nineveh; so the Son of man, sent from God, is himself the sign to his generation.
Jonah arrived as a man delivered from death's territory to preach repentance. So Jesus would be the sign above all in his death and rising -- the Son of man given back from the deep, as Matthew's account draws out (Matthew 12:40). The sign is not a spectacle beside him; the sign is him.
