What Does Luke 12:23 Mean?
Jesus gives the reason anxiety is misplaced: it gets the proportions wrong. Food and clothing serve life; they do not constitute it. The God who gave the greater gifts — life itself, the body itself — can be trusted for the lesser gifts that sustain them.
Worry inverts the order, treating the means of life as though they were its meaning. A person can be well fed and well dressed and still starved of what life is for: knowing God, loving others, doing His will. Jesus does not dismiss real needs — He teaches His own to pray for daily bread — He restores them to their true size beneath a life that is larger than its provisions.
