What Does Luke 16:27 Mean?
Refused relief for himself, the rich man thinks — for the first time in the story — of someone other than himself: his family. He begs that Lazarus be sent as a warning messenger to the house he came from.
Even this late tenderness keeps its old shape: Lazarus is still imagined as a servant to be dispatched. Yet the request is profoundly revealing. The man now believes with terrible certainty in the realities he spent his life ignoring, and he cannot bear that his brothers go on living as he lived.
