Luke 18:23 Meaning and Explanation

Luke gives the outcome in a single devastating line. The man does not argue, scoff, or bargain. He simply grieves, because the price named is the one thing he cannot imagine releasing. The Gospels record no further word from him; sorrow is his whole answer.

His sadness is its own testimony: he believes Jesus — and still cannot let go. Of all the responses to Christ in Scripture, this may be the most haunting: not rejection but sorrowful refusal, walking away wishing it were otherwise. The verse leaves every reader with the same quiet question: what would I be this sad to surrender? That is the rival Jesus would name in me.
