What Does Luke 19:3 Mean?
The street is packed, and for a hated tax collector no one steps aside. All his money cannot buy him a sightline. Luke names the obstacles plainly: he was little of stature, and the press of bodies was a wall.
Yet the desire itself is the seed of everything that follows. He does not yet want a favor or a healing, only to see Jesus, who he is. Whatever blocks that sight, a crowd, a frame, a reputation, the seeking heart is the one thing this chapter never leaves disappointed. Jesus will soon say he came to seek the lost; here the lost man is already seeking.
