What Does Luke 19:7 Mean?
The complaint is unanimous; they all murmured. Luke used the same word when Pharisees and scribes muttered that Jesus receives sinners and eats with them, but here even the ordinary crowd joins in. In their eyes the one house in Jericho a prophet must not enter is the house of the chief tax collector.
Grace has always scandalized onlookers who keep score. Jesus absorbs the reproach without a word of defense, because reaching one lost man is worth the muttering of the many. He bears shame on the way to the house of Zacchaeus as he will bear it on the way to the cross, and he counts the cost worth paying.
