Luke 2:18 Meaning and Explanation

The shepherds' story stirs Bethlehem. All they that heard it wondered, and astonishment ripples outward as the tale of angels, glory, and a Messiah in a manger passes from mouth to mouth through the little town.

Wonder is a right beginning, but Luke lets us see that it is only a beginning. The crowd marvels; the next verse will show Mary doing something deeper. Amazement at the things of God can fade by morning unless it ripens into faith. The verse quietly asks what we do after astonishment, whether the news of Christ remains a remarkable story we once heard or becomes a treasure we keep.
