What Does Luke 2:24 Mean?
The law of purification called for a lamb, but it made provision for the poor: if a family could not afford a lamb, two doves or pigeons would suffice (Leviticus 12:8). The offering Joseph and Mary bring is the offering of poverty.
The detail tells us, without comment, the economic standing of the home in which the Son of God was raised. No lamb could be brought, and yet they carried in their arms the Lamb of God Himself (John 1:29). God did not send His Son into privilege but into a humble household that worshiped within its means. Heaven counts no offering small that is brought in faithfulness.
