What Does Luke 2:49 Mean?
The first recorded words of Jesus are a double question: Why did you seek me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business, occupied with the things of my Father? Mary said thy father and I; Jesus answers, my Father. At twelve, He knows whose Son He is.
The little word must will sound through His whole life: He must preach, must suffer, must rise (Luke 4:43; 9:22; 24:7). The Father's will governs Him from boyhood to cross. Here is the heart of the Son, not rebellion against His parents but a prior, absolute belonging to God. And every disciple inherits the question: do the things of the Father hold first claim on us?
