Luke 20:15 Meaning and Explanation

The parable reaches its climax, and it is Jesus' own death foretold: cast out and killed. Within days he will suffer outside Jerusalem's walls (Hebrews 13:12). He narrates the plot to the very men devising it, showing them their own hands.

Then the storyteller hands the verdict to his audience: 'What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?' As Nathan once drew judgment from David's own lips (2 Samuel 12:1-7), Jesus makes the hearers pronounce on themselves. The question still works on every reader. We see clearly what the tenants deserve — and then remember that the Son was sent for us, died at the hands of our world, and rose with pardon in his wounds.
