What Does Luke 20:27 Mean?
A new set of challengers steps forward. The Sadducees were the priestly aristocracy of Jerusalem; they denied the resurrection of the dead, along with angels and spirits (Acts 23:8). Where the spies brought a political trap, these men bring a theological one — a puzzle crafted to make resurrection look absurd.
Notice that they ask about a hope they do not hold; the question is not a quest. Jesus will nevertheless answer with complete seriousness, and in doing so will give some of Scripture's most luminous words about the life to come. God can turn even a mocking question into the occasion of great revelation — which means no honest question of ours could ever drive him away.
