What Does Luke 20:41 Mean?
With his challengers silenced, Jesus turns questioner. The scribes taught — rightly, from the prophets — that the Messiah would be David's son, born of the royal line (Isaiah 11:1). Jesus does not deny the title; the Gospel has proclaimed it of him since the angel's words to Mary (Luke 1:32).
His question probes whether 'David's son' is a large enough category for the Christ. A merely dynastic deliverer — a restorer of national fortunes — was what many expected. Jesus presses the scribes' own Scriptures to show that the One they await is far more than a descendant. Every generation faces the same probe: our titles for Jesus may be true, yet our understanding of him too small.
