What Does Luke 22:16 Mean?
Jesus declares this his last Passover until the feast is 'fulfilled' - filled full, brought to its intended completion - in God's kingdom. The meal that remembered the exodus pointed forward all along to a greater deliverance and a greater feast.
He speaks like a man going to death with a banquet on the other side. Scripture ends with that supper: 'Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb' (Revelation 19:9; compare Isaiah 25:6). Every time his people eat the bread and drink the cup, they 'shew the Lord's death till he come' (1 Corinthians 11:26) - a memory that is also a reservation.
