What Does Luke 22:43 Mean?
Only Luke records this. Heaven does not remove the cup - the answer to the prayer is not exemption - but heaven does not abandon the Son either: an angel comes to put strength into him, as angels had ministered to him after the wilderness temptation (Matthew 4:11).
There is profound comfort in the shape of this answer. Sometimes God delivers from the trial; sometimes he strengthens for it, which is no lesser miracle (2 Corinthians 12:9). And there is mystery to adore: the Lord whom angels worship accepts an angel's help - so fully did he take on our weakness. Prayer that does not change the circumstance still brings down strength.
