Luke 22:57 Meaning and Explanation

The first denial. The man who vowed prison and death (verse 33) folds before a servant's observation: 'Woman, I know him not.' The words are precisely what Jesus had foretold (verse 34) - a disowning of acquaintance itself.

Note what fear does: it does not usually argue; it just lies small. Peter does not curse Jesus or renounce discipleship in theory; he merely edits the truth to fit the moment - and that is denial entire. Every believer knows the smaller forms: the silence, the changed subject, the laugh that goes along. The mercy of the verse is who preserved it - a church that knew its leader's fall and his Lord's forgiveness.
