What Does Luke 23:32 Mean?
Rome groups its condemned for efficiency, and so Jesus walks to death between two malefactors. Only the evening before, he had quoted Isaiah of himself: “he was reckoned among the transgressors” (Luke 22:37; Isaiah 53:12).
To his last hour Jesus is found in the company of sinners — accused as one, dying among them. What looked like one more indignity was prophecy keeping its appointment, and mercy taking its chosen place: he stands with the guilty in death so that the guilty may stand with him in life. One of these two men is about to discover exactly that.
