The eyes of the two disciples are held back from recognizing Jesus.

What Does Luke 24:16 Mean?

The two look at their new companion and do not know him. Their eyes, Luke says, were holden — held fast, restrained — kept for a time from recognizing the One walking beside them.

The Lord sometimes delays the full sight of himself so that something deeper can happen first. These two will hear the Scriptures opened before their eyes are opened, so that their faith will rest on the word of God and not only on a glimpse. When Christ seems hidden, he may be closer than ever — walking alongside, preparing a recognition that will last.

Luke 24:16 in the Original Language

krateo (κρατέω), 'holden' -- to hold fast, restrain.
