What Does Luke 24:21 Mean?
Here is the heart of their sadness: we trusted — past tense. They had hoped Jesus was the one to redeem Israel, and the cross seemed to bury that hope. Yet they add, almost in passing, that this is now the third day.
Their hope died one day too early. The phrase the third day carried Jesus' own promise of rising (Luke 9:22), but to them it is only a calendar of disappointment. In truth he had redeemed Israel — by the very blood they thought disproved it. When our hopes seem dead, redemption may already be accomplished, waiting only to be recognized.
