What Does Luke 4:32 Mean?
As elsewhere in the Gospels, the astonishment fastens on his manner as much as his matter. Teachers of the day taught by citing chains of earlier authorities; Jesus speaks as one who needs no footnote, and the difference is felt at once.
His word was with power because his word does what it says. In the scenes that follow, the same word will expel a demon and rebuke a fever, and creation will obey it. The word of Jesus still carries that force: it does not merely inform the mind but commands the darkness, comforts the broken, and calls life into being where there was none. To hear him is to stand in range of that power.
