What Does Luke 4:37 Mean?
A second ripple of fame closes the synagogue scene, wider than the first. In a world of foot travel and market talk, news of a teacher whose bare word expelled demons moved quickly from village to village through Galilee.
Fame is a strange servant. It will gather the great crowds of the coming verses, carrying the sick at sundown and pressing him at daybreak, yet renown was never the goal, and Jesus will repeatedly slip away from it to pray. The spreading report serves the mission only as far as it brings people within reach of his word and his touch. The chapter is moving toward verse 43, where Jesus himself names what he is actually here to do.
