What Does Luke 4:41 Mean?
As the sick are healed, demons also leave many of the afflicted, shouting his titles as they go: Christ, the Son of God. As in the synagogue, Jesus rebukes them and refuses to let them speak, and Luke explains why: they knew that he was Christ.
Why silence true words? Because the source corrupts and the timing distorts. He will be confessed by faith and revealed in his own way, supremely at the cross and the empty tomb, not advertised by darkness at the outset as a wonder-worker with a title. The demons' knowledge is accurate and useless to them; saving knowledge is not information about Christ but trust in him. He guards not only what is said of him, but who says it, and when.
