What Does Luke 4:8 Mean?
For the second time Jesus reaches into Deuteronomy, the book of Israel's wilderness schooling. The command he quotes was first given to a people surrounded by the gods of Canaan; he now wields it against the dark will that stands behind every idol. Get thee behind me is not discussion but dismissal.
Worship is the hinge of the whole contest, and Jesus refuses even to weigh the offer. Him only is the freedom of the undivided heart: when God alone is worshiped, nothing else can enslave. Whatever cannot be kept while serving God only was never worth keeping, and whatever is laid down for his sake is never finally lost.
