What Does Luke 5:13 Mean?
No one touched a leper; touch was how defilement spread, and the law required separation. Jesus puts forth his hand first and speaks second, answering the man's 'if thou wilt' with words as direct as the plea: 'I will: be thou clean.' The disease departs immediately, before the hand is withdrawn.
Where everyone feared contamination flowing one way, cleansing flows the other: Christ's touch does not catch the uncleanness; it conquers it. For a man starved of human contact, the touch itself was half the healing. And 'I will' answers the question beneath all our prayers — not whether God can, but whether God cares to. He does.
