What Does Luke 9:38 Mean?
From the multitude one voice breaks through: Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son, for he is mine only child. Luke, who alone notes that the boy is an only child, lets us hear a father at the end of himself, pleading not first for a procedure but for a look.
Look upon my son is a whole theology of intercession in five words: bring the suffering one into the gaze of Christ and trust his heart to act. Luke has already shown an only son of a widow raised at Nain and an only daughter raised from death; the Lord is tender toward the irreplaceable. He who is himself the beloved Son knows what an only child means, and he does not turn from a parent's cry.
