Jesus answers with lament: O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? The grief sweeps wider than the nine disciples, taking in a whole generation slow to trust, twisted out of true. Then, in the same breath, mercy resumes command: Bring thy son hither.
Hold both halves of the verse together. The Lord is genuinely grieved by unbelief, including that of his own, yet his weariness does not close his hands. The sigh and the summons stand side by side, sorrow and grace, and grace acts. We bring our failures and our half-faith to a Lord who may rightly groan over us, and who then says, all the same, bring him here to me.
