God recalls the original covenant with Levi as one of life and peace, given in response to Levi's reverent fear of His name.

What Does Malachi 2:5 Mean?

God paints a portrait of the priesthood as it was meant to be. The covenant with Levi was one of 'life and peace,' rich gifts flowing from God to His servants. And these gifts answered something real in Levi: a genuine fear of God, an awe that trembled before His holy name. Reverence and blessing went hand in hand at the beginning.

Here is the standard the present priests had abandoned. True service springs from true awe; where there is reverence for God, there is life and peace as its fruit. The 'fear' described is not cowering dread but the deep, humble respect that honors God as God. This verse is a beautiful reminder that nearness to God is meant to be life-giving, not burdensome. The peace these priests had lost was always available to a heart that reveres Him. To stand before His name in awe is the beginning of every blessing He longs to give.
