God asks who can endure the day of the Lord's coming, for He will come like a refiner's fire and like cleansing soap.

What Does Malachi 3:2 Mean?

The promise of God's coming is glorious, but it is also searching: 'who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth?' His arrival is no mere comfort; it is a purifying. He comes 'like a refiner's fire,' the intense heat that melts metal to burn away impurity, and 'like fullers' soap,' the strong cleanser that scrubs cloth clean. His presence exposes and purges what is false.

These images reveal that meeting God is transforming, not merely reassuring. Fire and soap both work by removing what does not belong, and the holiness of the coming Lord lays bare every heart. The question 'who shall stand?' is meant to humble us, for none of us is clean enough on our own. Yet refining fire and cleansing soap do their work for the sake of purity, not destruction. God comes not only to judge but to cleanse, to make His people fit to stand before Him. The very intensity of His coming is aimed at making us truly clean.

In the Original Language

metsaref (מְצָרֵף), 'refiner' -- one who smelts and purifies metal with fire, separating the precious from the dross.
