What Does Mark 1:11 Mean?
The voice of the Father speaks from the torn-open heaven directly to Jesus. In one scene the Son stands in the water, the Spirit rests upon him, and the Father speaks over him. The words gather up Scripture: the royal Son of Psalm 2:7 and the chosen Servant in whom God delights from Isaiah 42:1.
Notice when the voice comes: before a single sermon, miracle, or disciple. The Father's delight rests on the Son himself, not on his accomplishments, and everything Jesus does will flow from that love rather than labor toward it. Those who belong to Christ are drawn inside the same favor, loved as sons and daughters of God (1 John 3:1), and obedience that grows out of belovedness is the strongest kind there is.
