What Does Mark 1:34 Mean?
Far into the evening Jesus heals, disease after disease, deliverance after deliverance. The cases are many and varied, and none of them defeats him. Mark adds the now-familiar note: he would not allow the devils to speak, because they knew him. Again he refuses testimony from below.
Jesus governs not only whether he is known but how. Titles shrieked by unclean spirits could only twist the truth they contained; he will be known through his own words and works, and at last through his cross and rising. There is a pastoral word in that as well: Christ cares how we come to know him, rightly, personally, and from himself rather than from rumor.
