What Does Mark 1:8 Mean?
John defines the difference between himself and the One he announces. His baptism is real but preparatory, water reaching the body and expressing repentance. The Mightier One will immerse people in the Holy Ghost, the gift the prophets had attached to the days of fulfillment (Joel 2:28; Ezekiel 36:26-27).
The contrast is between the sign and the gift itself. Water can wash the skin; only God can fill a person. After his rising, Jesus kept this promise openly at Pentecost (Acts 2), and he keeps it still, cleansing, empowering, and dwelling with those who come to him. John prepared people to want what only Christ can give, and that remains the truest work of any preacher.
